A cruise vacation can cost anywhere from $3000 to $20,000+. I mean, at the high end, that’s a freaking car. So, is it any wonder that we can become obsessed with cruise planning? We scour cruise line websites for the perfect itinerary, our favorite ships and delicious food. We book flights and hotels and spend weeks deciding what we are going to take with us. Some of us spend the weeks and months leading up to the cruise, restricting our diets so we can look fit and trim (okay, trimmer at least) when we walk onto that cruise ship. On our cruise we will desperately try to capture our dream vacation in photos and video and when we return home, we will go back and post/watch the videos and photographs.

We become emotionally attached to our cruise vacations. Well, at least I do. If you are reading our obscure little blog, I assume you do as well.

Yesterday, I was reminded that we can have land-locked fun as well. My son was in from out of town and took us out for a couple of meals. He is quite the ‘foodie’ and having worked in our local food industry, the places where we dined were certainly not your average Mid-western restaurants. We enjoyed the ambiance and vibe of both places, even if we weren’t that crazy about the food. I, at least, am fairly provincial about food. I’m not a huge fan of fusion but I like to try new things even if I don’t love them or, in this case, they don’t love me. If I get something I don’t love, I remind myself that it’s only one meal and since I eat about a thousand meals a year, it’s no big deal.

We live in the Colorado Springs area and people visit our region from all over the world, well when there isn’t a pandemic. We’ve lived here so long that we sometimes forget what it is that draws millions of visitors each year. Our mountains are beautiful and also offer a handy navigational marker. In Colorado Springs, the mountains are always to the west of us so it is easier to figure out what direction you are going. There are museums and landmarks, as well as the Air Force Academy and the Olympic Training Center. We’re close to the mountains and the hiking here is incredible. One of the best things, though, is our lack of humidity. The only time I want humidity is when I am relaxing on the Lido Deck or on a Caribbean beach.

We are definitely land-locked but there are still lots of things in land-locked areas of the country we can enjoy. We will begin using the hashtag #landlockedfun for our local adventures and I would love to hear about your inland adventures as well.

Now, back to frantic cruise planning…
